2005 AWARD WINNER:

The Western New York Chapter of the Association for Bridge Construction and Design would like to announce our 2005 Bridge Design Award winner is the Stevens/Prospect Street Bridge Over the Erie Canal

Owner: City of Lockport, Niagara County, NY

Engineer: Hatch Mott MacDonald and NYS DOT Region 5

Contractor: Holmes and Murphy, Inc.

On September 15, 2005 at 10:00am, the new Stevens Street Bridge in the City of Lockport, New York was opened via ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new truss commentcment culminated fourteen years of planning, design, and construction that reconnects two segregated neighborhoods on either side of the Erie Canal at the south end of the City. The design and construction of this bridge blended design innovation, unique fabrication and installation practices, and bridge owner needs and preferences into an aesthetically pleasing truss that conformed to the Memorandum of Understanding entered between the City of Lockport, New York State Depratment of Transportation (NYSDOT) and the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). In addition to satisfying the requirements for SHPO for a replacement truss, there were several other unique features to the design and construction:
  • The bridge represents a negotiated compromise between community alignment needs, cost efficiency, and SHPO requirements.
  • The project presented significant environmental challenges, both landside and on the historic barge canal.
  • The design required the protection of the historic barge canal walls.
  • The fuondations were complicated by an old quarry formation.
  • The requirements for the exterior sidewalks together with the need to suspend utilities from the bridge complicated the design.
  • The requirements to not disturb canal sediments resulted in the Contractor "floating" the entire truss into place. The contractor was further hampered by the need to maintain canal boating operations.
