2001 BRIDGE AWARD WINNER:
FORD STREET BRIDGE OVER THE GENESEE RIVER IN MONROE COUNTY
Owner: Monroe County
Engineer: Bergmann Associates
Contractor: Pike Construction
Originally constructed in 1844, the Ford Street Bridge was modified in 1918 to carry trolley and vehicular traffic. By 2000, the 390-foot-long bridge had experienced deterioration and the removal of many of its ornamental and historically unique aspects and began to show structural deficiencies. Through close involvement with the State Historic Preservation Organization, the City decided to bring the structure back, as close as possible, to its original majestic form to meet the future transportation needs of the community. The four 32-foot concrete pylons adorning the four corners of the bridge were reconstructed. Period street and pedestrian lighting and bridge accent lighting were also recreated to incorporate original aspects of the bridge. The original trusses, sidewalk brackets and ornamental pedestrian railings were preserved.
Today, the bridge serves as the southern gateway to both the City of Rochester and the Erie Harbor area of the Genesee River, and connects the historic Corn Hill Neighborhood and the Mt. Hope-Highland National Historic District.
A strong spirit of teamwork and shared vision was evident between the individuals and agencies that worked together on this project. Public outreach and community coordination was instrumental in keeping citizens involved and informed.
