1998 BRIDGE AWARD WINNER:
IRONDEQUOIT BAY OUTLET BRIDGE AND MARINE PARK
Owner: Monroe County
Engineer: Erdman Anthony & Associates
Contractor: Crane-Hogan
The design for the seasonal swing bridge over the Irondequoit Bay outlet channel and associated improvements to the Irondequoit Bay Marine Park represents a unique cost effective compromise between boating and business interests. The project provides vehicular access to businesses on both sides of the outlet channel in the winter months and serves as a focal point for marine activities while maintaining unrestricted access between Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario during the boating season. Furthermore, the bridge eliminates a seven-mile detour and provides an additional emergency evacuation route for the Gina Nuclear Plant.
The two span swing structures has a main span of 132.5 feet and a counter-weighted back span of 53 feet, with the pivot located on the west bank of the channel. The superstructure is a galvanized pony truss with bolted connections. In order to meet the twelve-hour bridge removal requirement of the Coast Guard, traditional swing bridge machinery was adapted to accommodate the seasonal nature of the structure, providing a simple operating system.
