1995 BRIDGE AWARD WINNER:
REPLACEMENT OF ROUTE 21 AND THACHER STREET BRIDGES IN THE CITY OF HORNELL
Owner: NYSDOT - Region 6
Engineer: NYSDOT - Main Office
Contractor: A.L. Blades & Sons
Not one, but three bridges comprised this very important NYSDOT Region 6 project. For over 60 years two steel truss, open grate deck structures carried vehicles and pedestrians over the Canacadea Creek and Conrail's North-South mainline. Time, use, weather, and the high cost of maintenance necessitated the replacements. Proposals were opened on April 14, 1994 and A. L. Blades & Sons, Inc. was low bidder. As the significant project features indicate (A+B Bidding, Partnering, Detour Establishment, Environmental Matters, Utility Conflicts, Innovations in Construction Practices, and Safety) the challenges were monumental. However, due to the cooperative spirit between the Owner and Contractor the project was an overwhelming success. The words of the President of the Hornell Area Chamber of Commerce perhaps sum up the end result best
--
"The bridges were not only completed early but are a tribute to the excellent quality of the New York State Department of Transportation and A. L. Blades & Sons, Inc. This makes a tremendously attractive entrance to our City, one of which we are proud."
From a letter James Griffin to Robert U. Blades, Jr., Oct. 24, 1995
